Wow! We are happy to offer this splendid California Gold Token Pin for your consideration. It is set with five lovely California Gold tokens. This brooch comes with its original box. All pieces in this lot are over a century old and in attractive condition. What a rare and original find this set is!
This brooch is believed to have been handcrafted in the late 19th or early 20th century. It is made of solid gold and gold plated copper and/or bronze. Piece measures about 53 mm long. The total weight of this lovely item is 2.84 grams.
The two end tokens are catalogued by Mike Locke as Round 1858 California Gold 1/4 tokens. They have Liberty #2 obverses and Wreath #5 reverses. Locke states that they are "apparently solid 14K to 18 karat gold." They date from the late 19th century.
The two octagonal pieces are dated 1857 and have Indian #5 obverses with Wreath #5 reverses. Locke states that they are 10K to 14 karat gold.
The centerpiece is classified as a Round 1856 California Gold 1/2. It has a Liberty #3 obverse with 13 stars and a Wreath #5 reverse. This token is believed to be heavily plated in yellow gold.
The pin and clasp section of this piece is in good working order and is crafted from gold plated copper or bronze. Pin is straight and attractive.
The paper jewelry box was issued by the William Stolz company and dates from the early 20th century. Our reasearch shows this business was registered in 1903. The deep green box is printed with the maker's crest. It appears to be constructed of linen, hard paper and natural cotton. This box is crisp and pristine and a rare find in and of itself!
This brooch is in nice circulated condition. It is very attractive with great detail and color. Piece is quite sturdy with a bit of wear and toning. Box displays vibrant color and choice surfaces. What an interesting and beautiful set this is!
