Weather tracker: Heat to ease in central and eastern Europe

Since the start of September, swaths of central and eastern Europe have experienced temperatures well above average, with some places up to 10C (18F) above the seasonal norm.
A date temperature record was set in Estonia on Wednesday, where it hit 29.8C in Haapsalu. The September peak in the country is 30.3C, reached on 1 September 1992.
Heading into next week, the weather is expected to be closer to the seasonal average across much of Europe, with the exception of the Balkans, where it is likely to remain warmer than usual for the time of year.
Meanwhile, in western Europe, heavy thunderstorms have been a common theme over the past few days. On Wednesday, several departments in southern, central and eastern France were on orange alert for severe storms.
Marseille faced heavy downpours with about 50-70mm of rain falling in just 90 minutes, and almost 150mm falling over the course of the barrage. This led to widespread flooding and a water depth of 200mm during the worst storms to affect the city since 2021.
The Indian monsoon season has been particularly heavy and there has been severe flooding in parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. This follows a drier than normal start to the season and 11% less rain than the climatological average in June.
July and August more than made up for this loss, receiving rainfall 9% and 15% above average respectively. Heavy downpours are forecast over the next few weeks, and it is more than likely that the 2024 monsoon season will be wetter than average overall.
Elsewhere in the continent, after causing widespread damage in the Philippines this week, Super Typhoon Yagi is heading towards China. The maximum sustained wind speed has reached 130mph (209km/h), making it the second strongest tropical cyclone of 2024 after Hurricane Beryl.
Landfall is expected between Qionghai and Dianbai on Friday, bringing significant flooding to Guangdong and Hainan, with about 150-250mm of rain expected to fall over the course of Yagi. Schools have been shut, roads have been closed and flights suspended in advance.
